“

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people.

— Qur'an 5:89
”

About Kaffarah

Everything you need to know before you give.

What is it?

Kaffarah is the expiation prescribed for serious shortfalls in worship, most commonly:

  • Deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast (eating, drinking, or sexual relations during the day), fast 60 consecutive days, or feed 60 needy people two average meals each.
  • Breaking an oath (broken qasam), feed 10 needy people two meals each, or clothe them, or fast 3 consecutive days.

For the broken fast, you must also make up the missed day separately.

Who pays it?

Anyone who has deliberately broken a Ramadan fast or an oath. Kaffarah is heavy, but it is the route Allah Himself prescribed, so don't delay it.

When is it due?

As soon as possible after the breach. Don't postpone, it remains a debt on your record until completed.

How much?

Broken fast: approximately £300 (60 people × £5 each) if you choose feeding instead of fasting 60 days.

Broken oath: approximately £50 (10 people × £5 each).

How your gift is distributed

Kaffarah is converted into food parcels for verified needy households, matching the Qur'anic prescription of feeding people two meals each.

  • Broken oath, 10 people × 2 meals (£50)
  • Broken fast, 60 people × 2 meals (£300), or 60 days of consecutive fasting
  • Each meal goes to a different household so the scope of the expiation is met.

How we deliver

Distributed within 7 days of donation; we email a completion report. For uncertain cases (many old broken oaths, complex circumstances) you can ask one of our scholars via the Q&A form before paying, supervised by Shaikhul Hadith Mufti Abdur Rahman.

Your impact

Where your gift lands

Frequently asked questions

Why is Kaffarah so heavy?

Because deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast is treated as a serious matter in fiqh, it's the only expiation in the Qur'an that specifies 60 fasts. The intent is deterrence and atonement.

Can I pay it in instalments?

Yes. The 60 meals don't have to be paid in one go, but they should all reach 60 different people, not the same person 60 times.

What about kaffarah for oaths I can't even remember?

If you've broken oaths in the past and can't count them, scholars suggest paying enough Kaffarah to cover a reasonable estimate, alongside repentance. For uncertain cases, ask one of our scholars via the Q&A form.

If your situation is for missed fasts due to illness (not deliberate breaking), you need Fidya instead, much smaller amount.
